Fundemental metrology comprises all scientific metrological research and development tasks in natural science and technology. It covers theoretical and practical problems concerning units of measurements including their realization, dissemination through scientific methods, determination of errors and estimation of uncertainties in measurements.

The activities under this area is givan below

1. Establishment of the National Measurement Units System of the country
2. Estabilishment of the National Measurement Laboratory of the country,
3. Realization Establishment, Updating, Maintenance and Dissemination of National Measurement Standards of the country at the National Measurement Laboratory,
4. Estabilishment and maintaining international measurement traceability for the measurements,
5. Conduct Research and Development work on practical realization of measurement units, precision measuring technology,
6. Disseminate and promote measurement parameters and technology to Scientfic Industrial and Legal Metrology areas of the country,
7. Accreditation of calibration and Testing Laboratories for implementation of the National Measurement System of the country,
8. Training and consultation on measurement technology and advice on methods of resolving measurement problems.
